While the Philippines is admittedly a Friendster country, my recent experience with social networking sites shows that Facebook is also now gaining Pinoy members. Both social network sites already have their own mobile interface that allows cellphone users to login to their account.

Recognizing Facebook’s huge membership — having been “recently ranked by M:Metrics as one of the sites people visit most often on their mobile devices” — Palm created Facebook for Palm.

I downloaded and tried to install it on my Treo 650, but it isn’t compatible with my device. Facebook for Palm is supposed to work with Palm Centro, Treo 755p and Treo 680 smartphones.

Here are more details about Facebook for Palm from the official Palm blog:

You can use Facebook for Palm to:

Send and receive messages

View and post status updates

View and post photos from your smartphone

See your friends’ profiles and photos

Read and write Wall posts

View News Feed

Upload videos taken from your Palm smartphone

Use a mobile “Contacts” tab that aggregates friends phone numbers – view your list of friends and dial or text them directly

Maybe Palm could also come up with Friendster for Palm and Orkut for Palm for its customers in Asia and South America, respectively.

I didn’t know that there is a way to run Palm applications on Windows Mobile devices until I read about StyleTap’s official announcement of its plan to come up with a version for iPhone.

StyleTap Platform, I learned, is a mobile software that enables thousands of applications written for Palm OS to run on other devices. Styletap for WM has long been available, while a version for Symbian is already in beta testing. The iPhone version will be released this July.

A free 14-day trial of StyleTap Platform may be downloaded for free on its official website. A registered copy costs US $49.95.

Isn’t it great to know that you may enjoy the wifi capability of WM and Apple devices and still run your favorite Palm apps on it?

Juliana of Handycase.com e-mailed me this morning to inform me about the Palm OS freeware on their site. I checked it out and I found interesting — and best of all, free — Palm games and utilities.

Their free games include a series of IPuzzle Basic games, Logic Puzzle, Roman Table, Illusion Cubes, JoQPo, HandMemory, Stonestris and Triball. I downloaded and installed IPuzzle Basic edition 6 and Stonestris. IPuzzle is basically a sliding puzzle where you move squares one at a time to to correctly complete an image. Stonestris, is — of course — a tetris game. Handycase games may not be as crisp as the usual commercial ones, but they are still worth trying.

Other freeware from them include HandTube, a utility for YouTube users; HandClock, an analog clock; Priorities, an app that organizes your priorities; FreeContacts, a contacts and reminder suite; HandDraw, a paint-type app for Palm; TopicList, a to-do-list-type app that organizes information and tasks; and HandWriter, a text editor.

Handycase also offers a diverse line of commercial software for personal, professionals and corporate use.

As I was composing the previous entry, I ran into a problem uploading the accompanying image. While the upload dialog popped up, red x marks were shown instead of file icons. I was able to choose the file, but the upload did not begin. I had to manually do it using FTP.

I thought it was a Java-plugin problem, so I thought I install the necessary plugin first, then would update the post after the problem is resolved. I guess I was wrong in thinking it had something to do with Java, as it appeared to be a Flash-plugin issue, as discussed in this bug report on LaunchPad. As one of the commenters said, this problem “is present on 64-bit hard drive installations,” such as mine.

For now, I could only search for possible solutions, or use FTP for image uploads while waiting for the experts to resolve this issue.

I learned about the release date of Hardy Heron (or 8.04) -- Ubuntu's latest version -- from my classmate Max last month, but I got to install this user-friendy Linux operating system only last Sunday.

I learned about the release date of Hardy Heron (or 8.04) – Ubuntu’s latest version — from my classmate Max last month, but I got to install this user-friendy Linux operating system only last Sunday.

I was using Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) before I upgraded. Probably due to the various experiments I was doing with my PC, as well as some incorrect and incomplete program installations, my PC started getting sluggish. My Firefox 3 Beta kept on freezing and turning gray, and there were instances when the system kept on restarting on its own.

So after learning that the newest version is ready to be downloaded, I starting sorting my files and backing up on DVDs those that I needed to keep. I also downloaded and created a Hardy Heron installation CD for AMD64 systems.

Last Sunday, I finally completed the backups, so I proceeded with the upgrade. I chose to wipe out everything on my PC as I wanted to do a clean install. The process, however, was interrupted by an error with the LiveCD that I was using.

I had to install an older version first so I could download another copy of the installation CD. This time, I followed Ed’s advice to burn the ISO file at a lower speed. I also created an extra copy, just in case the first one malfunctions.

I was relieved when my installation — with Tagalog as the system languange — was completed successfully. I noticed that Hardy Heron was already using the Firefox 3 beta version. There was no need to tweak my router settings as it worked perfectly, and my Internet connection seemed faster than usual.

Installing the Flash plugin is easier with Hardy Heron — I was done with just a few clicks on the Synaptic program manager. I was able to watch YouTube videos later. My USB speaker wouldn’t work, however. A system restart after configuring the sound settings solved the problem.

I then installed Thunderbird, an e-mail client; Epiphany, a web browser; KTorrent, a torrent client; Twitux, a Twitter client; and NetSurf. Twitux and Netsurf have since been removed: I didn’t like the first; the second did not work.

Next on my to-do list is the installation of JPilot so I could sync my Palm Treo 650 with my Ubuntu-powered PC. Based on my past experience, I should not even worry about it. I shall tell you about when I’m done.
