Mapalad.org update

Mapalad.org, the official website of the Palm user group in the Philippines, is currently down.

I asked Sharon Agoncillo — one of Mapalad’s leaders — about it, and I found out that our group has just lost its sponsored web hosting.

While the officers of Mapalad are looking for new web hosting sponsors, members are advised to join the group’s Facebook page.

After Palm announced the Pre last month, I gathered reactions from prominent tech blogs and Pinoy techies, particularly Apple fans. I never got to complete it.

Still, here are some comments that I managed to dump on a WordPress draft, as well as those I recently saved while browsing old blog entries:

Book about Palm Centro

Palm Centro users who want more than the manual that comes with a new phone may be interested in this new book entitled “Now You Know Centro”.

Written by Patrick Ames and published by Peachpit Press, the full-color book which is currently priced at $17.99 (around Php 783) promises tips, tutorials, and techniques not disclosed in the PDF manuals.

“Now You Know Centro is meant to be fast and simple, allowing you to practice on your handheld while you read. You’ll learn about the wireless capabilities, e-mail, media and streaming media, accessories, productivity, and more. In minutes, you can watch your skills improve and use what you learn immediately,” the book’s description says.

It adds that the book “is designed for immediate gratification, not for hour-long reads, the exact way you use your smartphone.”

Palm catches attention, inspires conversations

Last Monday, I accompanied my girlfriend to the St. Luke’s Medical Center for a check up. I was reading an e-book on my Treo, while she was online on her phone as we were waiting for her turn to talk to the doctor. I heard one of the people who passed by in front of us say something about her PalmPilot. I asked my girlfriend what the woman just said, and she teased me: “Huh, nakarinig ka lang ng PalmPilot, eh.” Apparently, “PalmPilot” is like a keyword that is very effective in catching my attention.

A little later, while I was still reading on my Treo, the older man sitting beside me suddenly talked to me. He said “pareho tayo ng phone,” and showed me his Treo 650. I told him he’s using a complete phone that has a lot of useful features. Most of us Filipinos use Nokia cellphones, so I was surprised to learn that I wasn’t the only person in that floor who had a Treo. He told me his Treo was from the US. It didn’t have a memory card yet.

He asked me how to activate the radio feature, and I told him he had to have Internet connection to use it. I personally haven’t tried any streaming radio on my Treo, but I use it to listen to MP3s and watch videos. I noticed that his battery indicator was already red — meaning the phone would run out of power soon — and that his Bluetooth was active, so I showed him how to turn the Bluetooth off.

Indeed, great gadgets like the Palm Treo 650 inspire conversations even among strangers.

My name is Ederic, and I’m a Palm addict.

I started using a Palm –my girlfriend’s m130–in early 2003. Later that year, I bought my first Palm handheld–a Palm m100, which I eventually sold to a friend because I bought another friend’s m505. I later upgraded to a Palm m515.

Just last month, I bought a secondhand Treo 650. I’ve been playing with it for the past few weeks, installing and uninstalling programs while discovering more things that the Treo could do.

In this blog, I’ll be sharing with you my Palm Treo experience.

By the way, my favorite programs — other than Bewejeled, of course — are eReader, funSMS and AvantGo.
